This was a fun and, surprisingly, emotional book taking a look at the developing relationship between 2 college students.
Delaney and Maverick are both well written and developed characters that you can’t help but like. They really are the yin to the others yang and their similar emotional histories make it that much easier for them to relate to each other.
I enjoyed that craft Ms Mills showed in letting them get to know each other, especially showing the more sensitive side to the campus hero.
Given that this is a book about 21 year olds, we don’t get a super deep dive into the emotional and there is some drama just for the sake of drama, but that is to be expected.
This is definitely one to read, especially all of you football loving nerd girls!

Back in the Game~Meghan Quinn ~ New Release and Review

Vibrant and enchanting, she captures his attention, making it impossible for him to walk away without scoring her number. Their connection is immediate, their attraction palpable, and their relationship undeniable. Originally written as part of the Team Player anthology, it was fun to come back and read Calder and Rachel's story again.
This is a novella, so not a long read and not a super deep dive in terms of emotional or character development, but what is here is fun and entertaining.
Calder is a rare find. He's an awesome single Dad who also happens to be a pro hockey player. Every interaction between him and Rachel had me cheering for them to make it.
Ms. Quinn is a newer author for me and reading pieces like this make me want to read more of her future works.

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped. Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking. Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Review Round Up

It's that time again... Here are some of the books I read this week that didn't have already have a post.

ARC READS

Wild in Love (The Maverick Billionaires, #5)Wild in Love by Bella Andre

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Review Copy Provided by Author

Wild In Love is a fun romp of a book.
Tasha discovers that her father and brother have been living a less than honest life and involved her tangentially. She runs away to the mountains near Tahoe where she meets Daniel.
I liked both Tasha and Daniel. They are fun, entertaining characters and interesting to watch together.
If you are looking for something lighter, with a dose of instant attraction and a fast moving relationship, then this will be just the thing. What we see of Tasha and Daniel skims the surface, but still has you rooting for them.
If you have followed the other Maverick books, you will be glad to see the other principle characters appear in cameo roles. A fun, quick read, this is a great escape.

This is a prequel to a new, full length release Manic Monday. It's cute, but really just give us a taste for who Victoria is and the set up for her being in Chicago. It seems that Victoria may have been a secondary character in another book and Clean Slate is the transition from that world to the one being created in Manic Monday.

Barefoot in the Sun (Barefoot Bay, #3; Barefoot Bay Universe, #3)Barefoot in the Sun by Roxanne St. Claire

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

One of the things I enjoy about this series is the stand alone quality to each book. Yes, the stories are interconnected and probably more enjoyable when read in order, but I appreciate being able to pick one up and run with it.
Barefoot in the Sun focuses on Zoe and Oliver. They are an unlikely pair getting a second chance at love. This is an entertaining, well written story full of second chances.
Both Zoe and Oliver are interesting characters, but Evan (Oliver’s son) stole the show. Add in a little bit of intrigue and a great secondary cast and you have a fun read.

Manic Monday ~ Piper Rayne ~ New Release and Review

PRManicMondayBookCover5x8_MEDIUM

Manic Monday, an all-new hilarious and romantic standalone from Piper Rayne, is LIVE!

The perfect man for me is a blood-sucking lawyer. #pfftwhatever
Been there.
Done that.
Burned the T-shirt.
I didn’t swear off all men after my divorce, but I sure as hell swore off anyone remotely like my ex. On the top of that list? Attorneys. Everyone knows they can’t be trusted.
Now that I’m back in Chicago, my focus is my daughter, my mom and me. I haven’t given up on finding my happily-ever-after, it’s just on hold—indefinitely.
Then I see Reed Warner again, and he weasels his way into every part of my life, not willing to take no for an answer.
In spite of my better judgment I can’t stop thinking about the way his designer suits fit his muscular frame, or the way his blue eyes seem to eat me up with every glance.
You know when you’re on a diet and even hummus seems irresistible? Reed is like the equivalent of chocolate éclair and my willpower is fading fast.
The problem? Not only is he a lawyer…
He was the best man at my wedding.

Oh my gosh - where have I been that I haven't gotten to read the newish duo of Piper Rayne before now? I have been an Elisabeth Grace fan for a while, but I love her new partnership too!
Victoria is a single mom who moves back to her home town of Chicago after discovering that her mother has a progressive illness. Not long after returning, she runs into Reed - a former friend of her ex husband.
Victoria was a character that was easy to relate to and like. Her spunky independence helps balance the jaded attitude that came from leaving a bad marriage behind her. Reed is a character that almost boarders on too good to be true. He has just enough flaws to be believable, especially as we get to know the back story of his friendship with Victoria's ex later in the book. I especially liked these two together and how they balanced responsibilities with getting to know each other. A great secondary cast helps round things out; I especially loved the mean moms!
Well written and entertaining, Manic Monday is a great introduction to a new series and I am looking forward to seeing the stories coming for some of the secondary characters. There is a prequel to Manic Monday, Clean Slate, that is free at the time of writing this review. While it's not required reading, it does help show a little bit of the background between Victoria and Pete (the ex) that helps some of their interactions make a little more sense. I may be late to the game, but I am so glad I found this duo.

Blood Type ~ K A Linde ~ New Release and Review

A startling new vision of paranormal romance: When a human ventures into the world of vampires—a decadent milieu of blood-bonds and betrayal—she discovers that not all is what it seems. For Reyna Carpenter, giving up her body isn’t a choice. It’s survival. In a civilization laid waste by poverty and desperation, Reyna accepts a high-paying position with the wealthy and hungry vampire elite. Her new job is as the live-in blood escort for the intimidating, demanding, and devilishly handsome Beckham Anderson. He’s everything she expected from a vampire, except for one thing—he won’t feed off her. Reyna soon discovers that behind Beckham’s brooding, wicked façade lies a unique and complex man. And that, in a dark and divided world, she is more valuable than she ever would have believed. For with each passing night, Reyna can’t shake the sensation that it’s Beckham who’s afraid of her.   That was the moment Beckham appeared in the doorway like a storm cloud. Reyna straightened in her seat at the expression on his face. He walked across the room like a tightly coiled spring ready to explode. “Ah Beckham, there you are,” Harrington said. “Excuse me, William. I need to speak with Reyna. Alone.” She hastened out of her seat and followed him around the corner. He tugged her straight through the kitchens, out the back door, down a corridor, and into a dead end. Then her back was slammed against the brick wall. His fist connected with the wall behind her, and she felt the wall shudder. Debris floated onto her shoulders. “You left,” he growled. “I . . .” “No.” He pressed his finger to her lips roughly. She stopped breathing and just stared up into his eyes as dark as night. Her body trembled under the feral stare. “You left without me.” The silence was weighted. All she could do was sit with their bodies nearly touching. His finger on her mouth. Her mind wandering to hellacious places. “You are my subject. Can you imagine what it was like when I found you missing? When you turned up with three of my kind?” She shook her head minutely. He bared his teeth to her, and she shrank back. “These are meant to drink your blood. To drink you dry until there is nothing left of your body but a dry corpse. We are killers. We don’t hesitate. Just because we’re wearing suits and seem more like you . . . does not mean we are like you. We are not like you. They especially are not like you. The only way you get to the top of Visage is to be fucking ruthless, Reyna. Do you understand?” “You’re . . . scaring me,” she whispered. “Good.”

I'm going to be honest and tell you that I struggle when reading/reviewing books where I know the story isn't complete going in. That little nugget of information tends to linger while I am reading and flavors how I see things.
That said, I can also admit that having finished Blood Type I am now anxiously waiting for Blood Match so that we can see what happens to Reyna and Becks next.
Blood Type is a lot of different things rolled into one story. Yes, it's a paranormal story (vampires), but there are also strong elements of personal intrigue, political maneuvering, and the beginnings
of a romance.
Set in an alternate reality, we meet our heroine Reyna as she is setting out to try to make things better for her family. The path she follows leads her to living with a mysterious vampire, Beckham. I liked Reyna, but there were elements of her personality that I struggled with; a lot of that may have been her age (she's 21). It was harder to get a read on Beckham as we only see him from Reyna's perspective. I would have definitely appreciated seeing parts of the story from his Point of View.
I enjoyed Blood Type and really want to know where the story is headed!

Review Round Up

ARC Read

On the Line (Milwaukee Dragons, #1)On the Line by Liz Lincoln

3.5 Stars 🌟 - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy provided by Publisher via Net Galley

I really enjoyed this slightly different take on a football romance.
Seth is a single dad who has just signed with a new team in a new city and for the first time will need help from someone other than family in caring for his tween daughter.
Carrie is a middle school science teacher who lost her job due to budget cuts. When she runs out of teaching options and has her apartment sold out from under her, her brother connects her with his college friend who needs a nanny.
When the two meet they have no idea that that have already met....
It was incredibly entertaining to watch these two fight their attraction to each other in the effort to be professional. It was even more fun to watch them fall in love. I even appreciated that the relationship issues came from Seth trying to be a good dad.
Carrie and Seth are excellent characters and easy to like. I found myself rooting for them in this well written, fun, and sexy read.

Stay (Bleeding Stars, #5)Stay by A.L. Jackson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a book that has been lingering on my TBR for while and I’m so glad I finally made the time to read it. One note to fellow readers- don’t be intimidated by the fact that this is #5 in the Bleeding Stars series, as it’s a complete standalone. You do see characters from previous books, and their partners, but the focus here is on Ash and Willow.
Stay has all the hallmarks I’ve come to expect from the Bleeding Stars series. There is an Alpha/wounded hero, a sassy/stronger than she looks heroine, an amazing love story, and ANGST!
Very well written, Ms Jackson manages to break your heart and then put it back together again as we watch all of the things Ash and Willow have to go trough to find their happy endings.
This read just makes me want to read the rest of the series even more!

The Pecker Briefs ~ Sawyer Bennett ~ New Release and Review

The Pecker Briefs
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: April 17, 2018

Synopsis:

I never thought a pecker would get me in so much trouble.

I mean, sure… if you’re talking about a certain anatomical feature of mine that the ladies just love. Given my bachelor status and appreciation for all things curvy and feminine, I could absolutely see that. But a different pecker is making my life much harder than it needs to be.

My name is Ford Daniels, partner at the law firm of Knight & Payne, and my latest case has me wading through the finer points of peckers—woodpeckers that is. Specifically, the red-cockaded woodpecker. I swear, I can’t make this stuff up but that’s what the sexy-as-hell blonde chained to a tree told me this morning.

Her name is Viveka Jones and she is so much more than a pretty face. She’s got wit, charm, and razor-sharp smarts. Turns out my client is looking to bulldoze the red-cockaded woodpecker’s natural habitat in favor of a multimillion-dollar subdivision and the sexy attorney with legs for days (and days), just happens to be counsel for an animal rights group looking to put a halt to construction.

My client’s pissed, but all I can think about is getting Viveka across the table from me. And then on the table underneath me. Perhaps up against the wall. And then—

Well, let’s just say when it’s all said and done, I’m hoping the red-cockaded woodpecker isn’t the only pecker that gets some attention from Miss Viveka Jones.

About the Author:

Since the release of her debut contemporary romance novel, Off Sides, in January 2013, Sawyer Bennett has released multiple books, many of which have appeared on the New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists.

A reformed trial lawyer from North Carolina, Sawyer uses real life experience to create relatable, sexy stories that appeal to a wide array of readers. From new adult to erotic contemporary romance, Sawyer writes something for just about everyone.

Sawyer likes her Bloody Marys strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active daughter, as well as full-time servant to her adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or even better, both.

If you are looking for a fun, light hearted, sexy read then you have found it with the Pecker Briefs.
Ms Bennett takes confirmed bachelor, Ford, and introduces him to the woman end his wandering ways in the form of animal rights attorney, Viv.
Both Ford and Viv are easy characters to like and they are wonderful together from the very beginning. Ms Bennett does a fantastic job of making a potentially adversarial situation work to bring these two very different people together.
I appreciated that the secondary cast was kept small, but that those characters helped us get to know Ford and Viv all that much better.
With just the right amount of tension in just the right places, the Pecker Briefs was a true joy to read!
