When I picked up Bad News Cowboy, I was expecting a “friends to lovers” type book. What I discovered is that while there is that element to the story, there is really much more.

Jack and Katie are both characters that seem very strong and put together at first glance, but they are both fighting demons and serious baggage. I found the personal growth elements of the story to be compelling; especially the places where Jack talks about Katie being the only one to “see” him and what that meant to him.

While Jack and Katie are the focus of the story, the relationships they both have with the people around them are important to the story too. I both appreciated and was frustrated by the reaction of Katie’s family to the idea of her having a relationship with Jack. On one hand, I loved that they supported her, but I hated that they didn’t support their friend.

This is the third book in the Copper Ridge series and while I was able to easily step into the world with this book, I feel that reading the other two first would have added some context and been helpful.

In the process of leaving my review on Amazon, I discovered that the prequel novella for this series is currently free. It was a fun quick read and is worth checking out.
